I may just be going mad, of course.

I walked up to Elephant & Castle shopping centre today, and as I was coming back I happened to look up at the tube station across the road. I use that tube station almost every day, but I've never really stopped to look at it as a building.
It's absurd and strangely touching. It's a tiny outpost of "old" clinging desperately to its patch of pavement surrounded by hideous concrete and glass constructions and not too far from the truly abominable thing that is the shopping centre itself. It looks lost and on the point of giving up and slinking off into whatever strange underground place the spirit of old London lives in these days.

I'm trying to remember what I saw in which they break through the streets and discover the old city underneath them - I can't remember what city or what film or programme it was part of - but I often feel like that when walking around London. Like most of the city is still down there, and sometimes it comes back without our entirely noticing it, and then goes away again, quietly, to wait.

I went to Whitechapel the other night to find a dentist - no, really. When I came out of the tube I was expecting market stalls with people flogging nasty gold watches and Nokia fascias, and I'm sure they were there, but they weren't what I saw. What I saw were the little archways into alleys branching off the main road, and people dressed just a little oddly. And I could swear I heard horses in the street.

You know when everyone is going crazy about a book, or a film, or a band, and you just get sick to death of even seeing it mentioned, even by people…

Well, clearly I'm not going to manage to post a song every day, because for the last...what is it, like, six? I have kept trying and then deciding…
